PROGRESS AT YOUR OWN PACE

Our highly qualified skydive instructors help you develop your skydive skills every step, at a pace that you feel comfortable with. The first two theory days of the course are set but after that you can complete the 9 stages at your own pace. You can do a maximum of 3 jumps a day, so you could have your AFF course ticked off in a minimum of 5 days. Once your AFF course is complete, you’ll have the skills to jump solo! At this stage you are still classed as a student until you obtain your 'Certificate A'.

Comprehensive Ground Training

This internationally recognised AFF skydive course involves up to nine hours of comprehensive ground training before your first jump at Stage 1. We want to make sure we give you all the skills, knowledge and the confidence you require before your first skydive.

Prior to your stage 1 jump, our course program also includes time in the indoor skydiving wind tunnel. This is a key element in helping you practice your body position and turns which will give you more confidence in the skies and make it easier for you to pass the 9 stages.

Stages 1-9

Stage 1

During Stage 1, exit from the plane with the aim to overcome sensory overload and focus on practicing your altitude awareness and deployment technique. You will deploy and steer the parachute communicating with your instructor to guide you in for a safe landing.

Stage 2

In Stage 2, you’ll do a linked exit with two instructors. Your aim here will be to tune up the arch position with a focus on leg and arm awareness. You will then steer your own parachute, communicating with an instructor on the ground until you are guided in safely for landing.

Stage 3

In Stage 3, you’ll do a linked exit with two instructors. We will be teaching head maintenance here. Depending on your performance, one of your skydiving instructors will let you go and fly in front of you. The independence begins!

Stage 4

Stage 4 is all about hover control. You’ll do a linked exit with one instructor (however the option to have two instructors is available), and once you have demonstrated your stability, your instructor will release their grip on you, coming around to fly in front of you.

Stage 5

During Stage 5, you’ll learn turns, forward movement and docking. After a linked exit with one instructor, you’ll learn how to turn your body 360 degrees. After practicing 'docking' techniques, you will deploy your parachute at 5000 feet for an unassisted landing back at the drop zone.

Stage 6

After a poised solo exit, Stage 6 focuses on turns, forward movement and docking. You’ll practice 360 degree turns, with a 180 degree turn before deployment. Your skills will be well and truly building by this point and your confidence will be gaining momentum!

Stage 7

During Stage 7, you’ll jump out of the plane all by yourself in a solo dive exit. Then, you’ll be focusing on instability recovery and tracking. We achieve instability recovery by doing a barrel roll. Following this, we’ll get into tracking.

Stage 8

Stage 8 will see you consolidating your solo skydive training with a solo dive exit followed by fall rate control to your instructor, followed by a track. If you don't know these terms yet, fear not! You very soon will.

Stage 9

The final stage in your AFF course , Stage 9, involves a jump exiting the plane from 5000ft to orientate you with jumping from lower altitudes and teach you how to get stable within 10 seconds. Following this, you officially graduate. Time to pop the champers!

Completed your AFF and ready to progress?

Certificate 'A' & beyond

There's more to learn

The next step is to obtain your Certificate 'A' which means you are officially a licensed skydiver and no longer a student! To apply for this you must complete approximately 10 solo skydives after finishing your AFF course and complete an exam to ensure you’re sufficiently skilled in everything we’ve taught you.

Once you have satisfied all requirements of the course, you’ll be eligible to apply for your Certificate 'A' from the Australian Parachute Federation which means you are no longer classified as a student - you're officially a certified skydiver allowing you to jump at other drop zones!

For you to be able to skydive in close proximately to your friends, you need to then complete your B-Rels.

FAQS

We know that learning to skydive solo is a massive leap with lots of questions. If you don't find what you're looking for below, don't hesitate to get in touch.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE TAKE TO COMPLETE?

The first two days of the course are set days and you will need to be there and available for them. After that you can progress at your own pace. If you come in everyday you will have the best chance of finishing as soon as possible. Students can complete a maximum of 3 jumps a day, so to complete the 9 stages you would need at least 3 good days after the 2 theory days. It is best to allocate two to three weeks. After completing the 2 theory days, if you only have weekends available that's okay – just pray to the weather gods the weekend weather is consistently good. We recommend trying to complete your AFF course within a month of starting to keep momentum and to have all the skills and information fresh in your head.

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN THE AFF COURSE?

The AFF course can take you from never skydiving before to being able to be driving past on a beautiful day and saying 'let's just go for a skydive!' The course teaches you about your equipment, all the safety procedures, we go indoor skydiving and complete 9 skydives to make you qualified to jump out of a plane by yourself. Check out what’s involved in the nine-stage AFF course above.

WHEN CAN I JUMP?

Skydive Australia is all about safety and there are rules in Australia that govern the conditions in which each level of skydiver can jump. While you are considered a student the technical wind limit will be 15 knots. Making sure to stay within these limits will allow you to better manoeuvre your canopy and learn how it works. In turn it will ensure you are in a more controlled environment.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE DONE A TANDEM SKYDIVE FIRST?

No. Our professional and knowledgeable staff will teach you everything you'll need to know to be able to get you jumping solo. Our comprehensive course covers it all! We make sure to teach each step as thoroughly as possible, we cover theory components for safety, include tunnel time for easier practice and at Byron Bay, we'll even take you on your first tandem but let you be in control, pull the chute and steer (Tandem Accelerated Freefall).

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET MY CERTIFICATE 'A'?

To qualify for your certificate 'A' you generally need around 15-20 successful jumps. You will also need to complete and pass a written exam and you will need to have completed 10 unassisted safe landings within 30m of the target centre. During this process, you can still jump at our drop zone, using our skydiving gear and under the guidance and supervision of our staff and instructors.

ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS?

If you are unsuccessful in completing a stage you will need to repeat the stage at costs, the repeats cost between $220-280. Our course includes practice in the wind tunnel which increases the likelihood of you passing first go.

The course covers the cost of your APF Membership for the first month. After that you will need to cover the cost of the APF Membership yourself if you wish to continue in the sport. It is a requirement for all skydivers.

APF Annual Member fee is $216 or $126 for 6 months and is paid to the APF.
